When Eyes Speak Diabetes - Dr. Craig Brown on Diabetic Retinopathy, MTFHR & Methylated B Vitamins

<p>Diabetes can lead to eye problems, which include diabetic retinopathy (DR). This happens when high blood pressure causes retinal blood vessels to leak fluid or bleed. DR and other diabetes complications are also associated with hyperhomocysteinemia (high homocysteine levels). Thus, there should be very little homocysteine left in the bloodstream. Hyperhomocysteinemia leads to arterial damage and blood clots. It is usually seen in carriers of MTHFR gene mutations. If you have high levels of homocysteine in your blood, it may be a sign of a vitamin deficiency, heart disease, or a rare inherited disorder.
