60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: Did Steve Jobs Steal Ideas?

<p>Hello to you listening in <a href="https://visitnewlondon.org/" target="_blank">New London, Connecticut</a>!</p><p>Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.</p><p><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Jobs" target="_blank">Steve Jobs</a> is quoted as saying, “<i>We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas</i>.” In fact, some of his early ideas were lifted from Xerox; but he went on to develop his own products using his own creative thinking and intelligence. Copying is just a cheater’s game.</p><p>What do I mean? Decades ago one of my story mentors, the inimitable <a href="https://www.ocallahan.com/" target="_blank">Jay O’Callahan</a>, wrote a story called Orange Cheeks about his childhood days visiting a beloved grandmother. Imagine hearing someone else tell your personal story onstage - as he did -  as if it were their own experience, their own work, no permission, no attribution. <br />Drummed into me at a very early storytelling age was this: you do not co-opt, conscript, copy, mimic, or take someone else’s work and call it your own.</p><p>As a well-regarded and brilliant wordsmith I am often told, “<i>Oh! That’s perfect! I’m taking that question, tagline, idea, turn of phrase, imagery ...</i>”  To you I say this: No, you won’t. You are smart, creative individuals capable of independent thought. Come up with your own style of expression.
