“See past my skin colour. Don't disrespect my skin colour. See that inside me is a human being that deserves respect and honour. Just like you deserve respect and honour. A level playing field."

Waking Up To Racism. In the second part of my conversation with black friends and pastors Tony Ashley and Errol Lawson our conversation on black lives matter and racism expands.

What is it going to take to bring about a change in our society? Continued dialogue and a deeper understanding by us all is vital. To see more than we have seen before so that we can interpret situations, conversations and news items in a different way. So that we can ask different questions and share our feelings without fear of retaliation. In the very same and real way that black people should not have to fear speaking up for themselves when opportunities are not extended to them, skills overlooked or they are again marginalised.

The level too which I have not understood or considered racism has quite shocked me this week. Now is the time we all need to wake up to racism. This is the defining moment where every person steps up.

As many posts have said “it is not enough to not be racist – we have to be anti-racist”.

I didn’t want the conversation to be limited by time. As a result it is spread across two episodes. You can watch the whole conversation in the video on the YouTube or Facebook page. Allow yourself to be part of the conversation - please comment, ask questions and share.

You may think you have heard some of it before but for the first time I really started to imagine myself in that situation. Imagine my role as a Dad and how it would be different if I was black, for no other reason than my skin colour. I hope it hits home to you
