Description

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.

Another session to accompany the fourth module in the Youth Dhamma Gradual Teachings series looking into Buddha's Gradual Instructions to Lay People on DANGER IN SENSUAL PLEASURES (kāmānaṁ ādīnavaṁ okāraṁ saṅkilesaṁ)

In this additional session, we look at the important area of REPROGRAMMING THE PLEASURE SEEKER. With a human body, we are born to seek pleasure through our sense faculties. And from the time we are babies, we trained to continue to seek pleasure in the same way.

It is only through the Buddha's Teachings that we are taught the danger of being pleasure seekers, the danger of strengthening and reinforcing longing, craving and indulgence through our senses. The Buddha teaches us that we will experience pain and sadness in this life if we keep following this tendency and conditioning; and it will inevitably lead to bondage that will keep us coming back to the sense realms in samsara.

The focus of this session is to really investigate the process of pleasure seeking through each sense faculty. To see the decline, decay in this process - that it is flawed. And then to look at some methods to reprogram this conditioning that is based on ignorance and craving.

Some of the suttas that are mentioned directly or indirectly in this session:

— Kammanirodha Sutta (SN 35.146)

— Kāmayoga Sutta (Iti 96)

— Nibbedhika Sutta (AN 6.63)

— Vatthūpama Sutta (MN 7)

— Pariyesanā Sutta (AN 4.255)

— Āditta Sutta (SN 35.28)

— Dutiyacetanā Sutta (SN 12.39)

— Dutiyasatta Sutta (Ud 7.4)

— Dutiyasamugghātasappāya Sutta (SN 35.32)

— Bhaya Sutta (AN 6.23)

If you have any questions or comments regarding this talk, please email them to suttameditationse
