In this special 2-part Aging GreatFULLy series we put the spotlight on all things Relationships! In this first episode, Relationship RescYOU 101: Me Myself and I, we welcome special guest, relationship expert, Dr. Erica Goodstone, Ph.D., LMHC, LMFT, a Healing Through Love Mentor, as we focus on the most vital and foundational relationship – that being, the one we have with ourselves. Dr. Erica Goodstone educates us on mother-infant bonding and how the formative years, those we can’t remember, are paramount in how we view and engage in relationships later in life as well as how we adopt personal beliefs regarding internal and external love. <br />It’s an educational and insightful hour from beginning to end, as we discover how we are impacted by our culture, our family dynamic, upbringing and foundations of love. But most importantly, we learn about the brain’s plasticity allowing us to ability to improve areas where we may have experienced a deficit in those formative and younger years and this empowers us as adults to take the wheel and make positive improvements to make the rest of the years the best of the years moving forward. We discuss disappointment, forgiveness, and capacity for self-love and how the relationship with ourselves is an important one for many reasons. We also realize that when we look around and only see ourselves, it’s not only important to like that person in the mirror, but we also need to be able to count on them. We need to take stock in who we are. But also, it’s beneficial to become our own best friend, get behind ourselves, support ourselves in this journey of life, and know what we stand for and really appreciate what it’s taken to become the person we are today. When we do the work, we realize, when we’ve gotten ourselves to a place where we are good with the person in the mirror, we are ready for what the world –and others—may bring our way.
