Neoliberalism: The Scope, Application and Limits of Free Markets, with Dr Gordon Menzies

<p>Jonathan is joined by economist Dr Gordon Menzies for a deep dive on neoliberalism. They discuss the concept of free markets and the logic of extending free market thinking to aspects of human life that are not obviously economic. They examine and evaluate the neoliberal economic reforms of the 1980s, including floating the dollar, trade liberalisation and privatisation. They explore the causes of the global financial crisis and the role of neoliberalism in the near collapse of the financial system and the policies employed to deal with it. They discuss poverty and the purported role of neoliberal economic policies in generating, or failing to ameliorate, poverty. And they close with a discussion about the likely moral and economic consequences of a libertarian utopia based on a society organised primarily by market forces.&nbsp;</p> <p><br></p> <p>Dr Gordon Menzies is an award-winning Associate Professor in economics at the University of Technology Sydney. In the 1980s, he worked as an economist at the Reserve Bank of Australia.
