Description

Motorsport Ireland says there will be "no knee-jerk reaction" regarding how it runs its events following the death of a competitor at the Clare Stages Rally yesterday. 37-year-old Damien Fleming, who was a native of Kilcummin, Co. Kerry, was competing as a co-driver in the annual Clare Motor Club event in Glencolumbkille, Carron yesterday when he tragically lost his life in a two-vehicle collision. It's understood the driver of the car was uninjured while the driver of the second car was transferred to University Hospital Limerick for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Motorsport Ireland Sporting Manager Art McCarrick says tragedies such as these are especially difficult to grapple with when the necessary safety measures have been put in place.
