Description

Kalei Ruiz is a Counselor at Leeward Community College. Today's podcast with Kalei shares how indigenous views on sexuality did not make it shameful the way it does with colonized worlds. This week we are focusing on body awareness and language, specifically with using the correct names for our body parts. For too many years our society has perceived the use of vagina and penis as “bad words” or embarrassing words to say. Oftentimes parents and other adults make cute names out of vagina penis such as wee-wee or hoo-hoo or nani. The Well-Armored Child talks about how that minimizes our bodies and it’ll confuse our keiki into thinking that it’s a playful thing rather than a more serious thing that should be protected. We also don’t want to bring shame to our body and speaking about them appropriately, biologically can help our keiki be protected against abuse.
