Misusing one’s tongue or demeaning others is rooted in pride, not humility. It is pride, because to demean someone is to elevate oneself above the other person. Hence, James issues a twofold warning about the danger of demeaning others in James 4:11-12. First, demeaning others violates God’s Law. Second, demeaning others usurps God’s authority.
