July 11, 2023 Sac City Council Meeting

Notes from the July 11, 2023 Sac City Council Meeting Citizen’s Opportunity to Address the Council on non-agenda items. The Maintenance Department was recognized for taking over painting tasks from the Trails Committee and getting Sac City ready for Chautauqua Days. Miscellaneous 2nd Reading of Ordinance No. 2023-320 entitled, “An Ordinance Adopting the ‘Code of Ordinances of the City of Sac City, Iowa.” The second reading of this ordinance was unanimously approved. The 3rd Reading of Ordinance No. 2023-320 was unanimously waived. Consideration of Resolution No. 2023-20 entitled, “A Resolution Authorizing a Notice of Interest to Fill a Vacancy on the City Council.” The resolution was amended to reflect a date change in the letter of interest of July 21, 2023 at 4 p.m. and a date change for the resolution to go into effect on July 25, 2023 at 5 p.m. Interested people need to submit their letter of interest- in writing- to the City Office by 4 p.m. on July 21. The amended dates comply with the 4 to 20 days necessary for this resolution. Consideration of Resolution No. 2023-21 entitled, “A Resolution Establishing the Position of Detective within the Sac City Police Department.” This resolution does not mean a new hire; one of the existing officers will add the detective duties to his or her other duties. The primary function of the detective is to do investigations; this means one person will be in charge. The secondary reason is that the Sac City Police Department is falling behind on salaries for officers with cities of similar size to Sac City. With another retirement predicted for the near future, this would bump the pay grade up to one similar to a captain’s grade. The detective would have more incentive to stay and not lured away as easily. The other officers would be freed up for their patrol duties. The Chief of Police will make the recommendation for detective to the City Council; the position will be nonsupervisory. The resolution was unanimously approved by the council members in attendance.
