I used the word “semi-pro” because the individuals playing the games were not always guaranteed that they would be paid for their participation. Written contracts were usually non-existent and players generally were secured for each individual contest, rather than locked in for an entire season.</p><p>In 1919, the Racine Cardinals (short for the Racine Cardinals Pleasure Club) scratched out a 4-2-2 record in the Chicago area with a roster consisting of a combination of local street players alongside former collegiate athletes.
