It all came to a head on Monday with a showdown over the expulsion of families of East Jerusalem, tear gas at the Al-Aqsa mosque and just when Jerusalem Day tensions seemed to be subsiding, Hamas made good on an ultimatum and at 6.01pm hit Jerusalem with one of its rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. The attack from 75 kilometres away came as a complete surprise, kicking off the worst fighting in seven years and the prospect of yet another war between Israel and Gaza.
