Luckily, we’ve got NASA astronaut Mike Massimino and Bill Nye, CEO of the Planetary Society, in studio to answer this Cosmic Query. Mike explains how the Hubble Space Telescope, which has no fuel on board, uses gyroscopic reaction wheels to change position in accordance with Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion. He also tells co-host Eugene Mirman how the Space Shuttle and the ISS use thrusters to maneuver. But it’s guest host Bill Nye the Science Guy who explains why “What is the rocket is pushing against?” is the wrong question entirely.
