Grand Marshalls And Representatives Discuss Excitement Ahead Of Ennis Parade

On Thursday's Morning Focus, Alan was joined live in studio by Jimmy O' Brien who is the Grand Marshall of the Ennis St Patrick's Day Parade, Kevin Rynne who is the grandnephew of former professional boxer Mike McTighe and Aidan O' Donnell who is the great grandnephew of Honest John Purcell and the nephew of PJ Purcell who is the Grand Marshall of the Ennis Parade. Clare Colleran Molloy who is the Mayor of Ennis also joined the interview. They discussed St Patrick's Day and previewed the upcoming parade that is set to take place in the county town. Aidan spoke about his grand- uncle Honest John Purcell who was born in Barefield in the 1860's. He described his sporting career where he became a world record holder in athletics. He also highlighted John's passion for competing in long and triple jump competitions. Kevin discussed the centenary of Mike McTigue's world title win in boxing in 1923. He complimented his relatives ambition to emigrate to America and take up the sport where he would become a serious contender for the world heavyweight championship. Jimmy admitted his pride in being a Grand Marshall for the St Patrick's Day parade and mentioned his close relationship with Ennis Rugby Club where he was a former player and President with the club. Clare highlighted how integral sport is in our community and the role it will play in the Ennis parade. She also described the proceedings of the parade and what can be expected. Clare also advised people who will be attending the parade that additional parking will be made available throughout the town in particular locations on the day.
