FREE SPEECH 68: Can Professors Get Fired for a Tweet? With Professor Henry Reichman

<p>Should professors be held accountable for speech they make off-campus, on-line, and apart from their professional role in the university? Does academic freedom mean freedom of speech (it does not), and what are the crucial differences? I spoke with Professor Henry Reichman, who has served as Vice President of the American Association of University Professor, a prestigious organization that defends (and explains) academic freedom for now over 100 years. Professor Reichman has chaired the AAUP's Committee on Academic Freedom and just published a lucid book on these issues called <a href= "https://www.amazon.com/Academic-Freedom-Critical-University-Studies/dp/142142858X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=future+of+academic+freedom&qid=1579747713&sr=8-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Future of Academic Freedom</a>. He believes that we must not take academic freedom for granted, and that the time is now to explain it, stand up for it, defend it.</p>
