Episode 59: Mrs Clucks - Ruth Drinkwater

<p>Episode 59 features Ruth Drinkwater, Director and Co-Founder of Mrs Clucks @mrsclucks Ruth shared how she, along with her business partners, are making a difference in the world of commercial egg production. We've considered it normal to confine chickens to cages for so long, but it's truly time to give a cluck. Why do you ask? Well, when chickens are happier, they produce better quality eggs that not only taste better but are better for you. But, of course, having one bad day instead of living an eternity of bad days is the most ethical and humane approach, and we’re keen to support it!</p> <p> </p> <p>Mrs Clucks is challenging the industry by operating at a standard of 350 hens per hectare. In the future, they aim to get down to 100 hens per hectare. This ensures the chickies have optimal room to stretch, flutter around, eat worms and do whatever their heart desires. </p> <p> </p> <p>To give you some perspective the CSIRO recommended density level is 750 hens per hectare, which only some free-range farms abide by. From that point onwards, numbers only climb, with some sharing their space with over 10,000 hens, in a shed with minimal or no time outside. Oh, and that's considered 'free-range'.
