"Jon's good at names" [I didn't use to be]

We're on a mission to help one million people RISE by 2030 - join the movement at www.myrise.co.uk

You ever met someone at a party………..

Been introduced to them………..

And seconds later, not been sure what their name is?

I’m sure we all have.

I used to think “I’m not very good at names”.

Which might surprise members at RISE.

Who, over the years have told me (and the other coaches) that “You’re good at names”.

Because, like any good skill, the harder we work at it the more natural it looks.

To the point where it’s easy to not even realise it’s a skill at all.

I’m good with people’s names because I came to realise that I just wasn’t making sufficient effort when I thought “I’m not very good at names”.

No real attempt to remember the name I’d just heard – kinda just hoping it would stick automatically when it hadn’t before.

Since then, I’ve made an effort.

Every time.

If I’ve met you in person then the first time I met you I would’ve been repeating your name back in conversation.

“So, tell me NAME……..”

“Hey NAME – you’ll need XYZ for this Session”

I’ll have been repeating it back in my head.

In Sessions I would’ve be working round the room repeating everyone’s names in my head until they all came to mind instantly.

Checking who was booked in for that Session for any names I was unsure about.

Doing finishers that involved me saying everyone’s name in turn so I had the pressure of making sure I’d learned them all by the end of the Session.

And so on.

Not a natural thing.

A skill developed with practice.

Again, like most things.

Things we don’t always realise are skills.

When we say things like;

“I’m not a good cook”.

“I’ve never been very good at exercise”.

“I find tracking to be
