Commemorating Genocide: Stories of Love and Resistance with Bared Maronian and Dr. Marie Berry

<p>In this episode, we think about what it means to commemorate genocide and mass atrocity with our guests, Bared Maronian, Executive Producer at Armenoid Productions and director of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Women-1915-Gloria-Sanders/dp/B08VMTL9YD" target="_blank"><u><em>Women of 1915</em></u></a>, and Dr. Marie Berry, political sociologist and author of<a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/war-women-and-power/F2A6FD1C3C6EE59ECA3F189862A32317" target="_blank"> <u><em>War, Women, and Power: From Violence to Mobilization in Rwanda and Bosnia-Herzegovina</em></u></a>. We thank our sister show, Middle East in Focus, for giving us their time so we can air this special one-hour episode.</p> <p>April 24th is Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, and April more generally marks the commemoration of several genocides: the Holocaust, the Cambodian genocide, the seige of Sarajevo, the Rwandan genocide, and the Darfur genocide, to name only a few. There is much to complicate about any of these events, including the politics of naming them and considerations around which events get categorized as “genocide” and which do not. Today, we ask: What happens when we look beyond statistics and official narratives about genocide and instead turn to poetry, film, and stories of joy, love, resilience, and resistance to inform our approach?</p> <p>Bared Maronian is Executive Producer at Armenoid Productions and director of the film<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Women-1915-Gloria-Sanders/dp/B08VMTL9YD" target="_blank"> <u><em>Women of 1915</em></u></a>, which documents the plight of Armenian women during the genocide and the non-Armenian women who came to their rescue. &nbsp;<a href="http://www.marieeberry.com/" target="_blank">Dr. Marie Berry</a> is an Associate Professor at the<strong> </strong>Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver.
