Description
The Clare Chair of the Irish Farmers Association is urging supermarkets to use local crops to cut down on unnecessary waste. It comes as the IFA has said the exacting standards of supermarkets on fruit and vegetables are costing farmers a fortune. With food waste and loss estimated to contribute to almost 10% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, the Irish government has pledged to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030, in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals. Parteen Farmer, Tom Lane, says its important good quality local food isn't wasted.
