Description

The Clare based General Secretary of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmer's Association claims the sector needs enhanced government supports to adopt greener alternatives. New data from the central statistics office shows that the sale of artificial fertiliser for agricultural use has plummeted by 16% over the last two years. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to the price of key ingredients such as nitrogen and ammonia soaring, forcing farmers to adopt organic alternatives. Cratloe farmer, Eddie Punch says however that the industry needs a helping financial hand to continue to meet demand.
