Description

A member of the Bar Council of Ireland currently practicing in Clare claims those in the profession are being forced to take unprecedented steps to achieve pay parity. There are currently over 20 criminal barristers operating in this county who will take part in a nationwide strike on October 3rd in a major escalation of its campaign for fee restoration. Following cuts imposed after the financial crash of 2008, the fees received by criminal barristers for legal aid cases, currently correspond to 2002 levels in nominal terms. Clare Barrister Cian Kelly says that the determination of a reasonable fee is crucial to the viability of their service.
