The amateur artist and unemployed architect developed the word game in the midst of the depression....originally naming Lexiko and then Criss-Cross Words... then in 1948 James Brunot bought the rights to the game and called it "Scrabble," which means "to scratch frantically." and Brunot and his wife converted an abandoned schoolhouse in Connecticut, into a Scrabble factory.
