23. Knock Knock, It’s the Helvetii

<p>A massive migration of "barbarians" is headed directly for one of Caesar’s provinces. This is Caesar’s first test as Proconsul. The tribes say they want to pass through Transalpine Gaul but promise not to misbehave. Caesar is having none of it. What’s more, he has spotted an opportunity for glory. </p> <p> </p> <p>Note: Further Gaul and Transalpine Gaul are two names for the same province. In this episode I use the terms interchangeably.</p> <p> </p> <p>Correction: I discuss the practice of forcing your enemies to “pass under the yoke” in this episode. I stated the yoke would be a triangle made of spears that defeated soldiers would be forced to march under. This was a mistake as the yoke would really be two spears stuck into the ground with a third spear running perpendicular and connecting them at the top.
