The transatlantic slave trade was one of the darkest chapters in human history. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, more than 12 million Africans were captured, sold, and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas and the Caribbean. Families were torn apart, cultures were disrupted, and entire regions were devastated so that enslaved people could be forced to work on plantations, in mines, and in households for the profit of others. West Africa was at the center of this brutal system, and one of its most infamous gateways was Badagry, a coastal town in present-day Lagos State, Nigeria. European traders – including the Portuguese, British, Dutch, and Brazilians – built trading posts and forts along the coast, turning the town into a hub where human lives were bought and sold.
