(3 Ne. 3:19) If all the nations and churches selected leaders who had the gift of prophecy and revelation, what a great world it would be! The less revelation received, the more corrupt the world becomes. The Prophet Joseph Smith said: . . . we can see that the doctrine of revelation far transcends the doctrine of no revelation; for one truth revealed from heaven is worth all the sectarian notions in existence. (TPJS, p. 338) When a prophet says, “Thus saith the Lord,” people can have a great deal of trust and confidence in that prophet: We never suffered ourselves to go into any important measure without asking Brother Joseph to inquire of the Lord in relation to it. Such was our confidence in him as a Prophet, that when he said, “Thus saith the Lord,” we were confident it would be as he said; and the more we tried it, the more confidence we had, for we never found his word to fail in a single instance.
