Clare Hairdresser Fears Reintroduction Of Higher VAT Rate Will Leave The Sector In Dire Straits

A Clare hairdresser believes the hospitality sector will be left in dire straits if the government reinstates the 13.5% VAT rate. The Irish Hairdressers Association and the Restaurant Association of Ireland have issued a joint statement today, calling for the retention of the lower 9% rate, which was introduced to supplement business during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the sector has reported difficulties in the same period, due to a significant increase in operating costs and challenges in recruiting qualified staff. Bridget Haren of Bridget Haren Hair and Beauty in Ennis has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that the measure would force customers into the unregulated black market for services.
