How I Overcame Shame: My Experiences as a Young Black Girl and Self Image & the Past

My experiences as a black youth taught me a lot of what my ancestors experienced. I always enjoyed history and a unique perspective. However, I developed at a young age and felt ashamed of myself and wanted to die. I held this secret for a long time and it effected my self image. When I reflect upon my ancestors and what they experienced during their journey on the plantation. It frightens me thinking about it. I have gained strength from my ancestors. I participated in a research study with Venus and Serena Williams when they first began playing. It opened my eyes with how the media portrays black women and defeminizes us.
