Gospel of Mark - Mark 9:42-50 - Prog 45

In Mark 9, we finish up this chapter with Jesus’ words. He continues His instruction concerning maintaining peace amongst believers. In saying this, our Lord speaks of rewards for whose who support the followers of Christ with even a cup of water. But Jesus also addresses the need to deal with sin especially that which affects little ones. Here Jesus speaks of the severe consequences upon those who cause one of these little ones who believe in Christ to stumble. Then our Lord addresses the sin in one’s own life. By way of a form of speech called hyperbole, a figure of speech, Jesus uses exaggerated word pictures of severe actions towards one's own sin in the body. These actions are not to be done literally. Jesus is emphasizing the need to deal seriously and decisively with personal sin.
