Episode #172: "I Have SOMETHING To Say" with special guest, Samuel Vilchez Santiago

<p>Anti-immigrant laws impact the economy and our humanity. In this episode of I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY, my dear friend Samuel Vilchez Santiago, with whom I’ve advocated for social justice causes at the local, state, and national levels, joins me to talk about Florida Senate Bill 1718 in effect July 1st, and its impact to our community, economy, and cost of living. </p> <p>Samuel is Florida State Director of the American Business Immigration Coalition (ABIC), a bipartisan organization that engages activists, advocates, business leaders, and elected officials on the urgency of passing immigration reform that boosts our economy, creates jobs, eases the labor shortage, and supports families.</p> <p><span data-ogsc="black">He reminds us of the quote by Martin Niemöller: “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.” Samuel also reminds us that anti-immigrant laws are nothing new. <span data-ogsc="" data-ogsb="white">Proposition 187 in 1994 sought to limit services to undocumented immigrants</span> and required verifying and reporting the immigration status of all individuals, including children.</span> After 5 years of advocacy, this law was voided.</p> <p><span data-ogsc="black" data-ogsb="white">SB 1718 in Florida, passed WITHOUT making it a felony to transport or live under the same roof with an undocumented person, under penalty of spending 15 years in prison, because of the strong bipartisan advocacy of the church community and organizations like ABIC.<span data-ogsc= ""> </span>“This would have affected me directly because my grandmother came to visit from Venezuela, and we are in the process of getting everything in order for her to stay with us, but her undocumented status would have made it a felony for us to care for her.
