Description

When I started to work on this podcast, I thought it would be simple to say "wash your produce." As it turns out, things are not as simple as they seem.

The FDA has 7 Recommendations for washing produce and none of them include soap or vegetable wash. They do recommend using a vegetable brush

Digging deeper into more produce washing recommendations I found 3 other ways to wash produce.

1- Vinegar and Water in equal parts.

2- Baking Soda and Water (Use 1 Tablespoon Baking Soda to 1 Cup Water.)

3- Hydrogen Peroxide and Water (Use Equal parts 3% Hydrogen Peroxide and Water.)

It is also recommended to not soak your produce directly in the sink. It is better to use a bowl and lift the produce out of the bowl so dirt and debris remain in the bottom. I find a salad spinner is the best thing for soaking produce. You can just lift out the basket and pour out the water and dirt.

The bottom line is that it is important to wash your produce and if it is firm produce use a brush to scrub it.

Follow for episode show notes and links.

Episode 71
