"United haven't spent any money on players" ["That's not true though is it?"]

We're on a mission to help one million people RISE by 2030 - join the movement at www.myrise.co.uk

Some how or other my two older sons have ended up as Man U fans.

I know, I know đ

Iâm a Derby Country âwell wisherâ.

âFanâ would be a bit strong as Iâm not all that bothered.

But if I had to say I âhadâ a team, it would be them.

I was talking to the boys about the protests at Old Trafford the other week.

And they kept saying something Iâve seen many people say on social media in recent weeks (and months and years).

âUnited havenât spent any money on playersâ

âThat canât be trueâ I thought.

So I googled it.

Theyâve spent the second highest amount of any team in the world over the last five years (behind only Man City).

And have the fifth highest income.

Overall they are second in the world (again to City and out of the big clubs) on spend on players versus income.

So the suggestion that theyâve âspent nothing on playersâ is laughable.

Itâs what their mates had been saying and what theyâd seen on the internet, of course.

Now there are clearly discussions as to whether theyâve spent it on the right players for the right reasons.

On what else theyâve spent, their debt and more.

But if someone says âtheyâve spent nothingâ (or even âtheyâve not spent enoughâ) then theyâre just having the wrong conversation.

And all wrong conversations distract us from the right ones.

Itâs like I mentioned in earlier blogs about the belief that âthe gap between the rich and the poor keeps growingâ.

When the evidence shows the opposite.

Itâs a spread not a gap and itâs more even (relatively) than at any point in history.

Or that ânobodyâs following COVID regulationsâ when millions clearly are.

Doesn
