<p>When I saw news of a popular new garden book called “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=the+heirloom+gardener&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjw2vOLBhBPEiwAjEeK9tHK6y4My4Q8DA1wKVUndONyIi29OgxiFM8mhZsKjKAIrQJ9qZHM9hoCnQkQAvD_BwE&amp;hvadid=241611836358&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvlocphy=9003208&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvqmt=e&amp;hvrand=14251982789791816886&amp;hvtargid=kwd-328018837897&amp;hydadcr=15081_10343654&amp;tag=googhydr-20&amp;ref=pd_sl_v3k9o5mej_e">The Heirloom Gardener</a>,” I thought it would be about growing vegetables or flowers of old-time, open-pollinated varieties maybe. You know: of heirlooms. But <a href="http://www.jforti.com/">John Forti's</a> latest book is about much more, about not just traditional plants, but traditional practices, too, that serve to connect us to the environment and to one another.  </p> <p>John Forti is a garden historian and heirloom specialist and ethnobotanist, and a longtime leader in the slow-foods movement. He's currently the executive director of <a href="https://www.bedrockgardens.org/">Bedrock Gardens landscape and sculpture garden</a> in New Hampshire. </p>
