When will Australian kids be vaccinated?

28 million American children between the ages of 5 and 12 are lining up to get vaccinated against COVID-19, after health authorities there gave Pfizer's jab for kids emergency approval. In Australia, the health minister Greg Hunt says there'll be a little more of a wait, although he is indicating the first jabs could be administered to children by January. So what do we know about how COVID-19 affects children? And can the delay in vaccinating them be justified?
