Description

Avocados! Surprise! The avocado is a fruit! Actually avocado is a large berry that contains a single seed. Maybe that’s why they work so well with mangoes, pears, peaches and pomegranates. Yum! So what does an avocado and an alligator have in common? Skin! Sometimes the avocado is called the alligator pear because of its rough green skin. Plus, when cut in half it looks just like an alligator’s eye! There are over 500 known varieties of the avocado in the world, but the Hass variety is the most common, and became very popular beginning in the 1970s. There are 7 varieties grown in the San Diego area of California, but only one dominates the market. About 5% of all avocado sales takes place just two weeks before the Super Bowl…that’s a lot of guacamole dip! Did you know that avocados should have been extinct by now? .....
